Target has definitely stepped up their board game selection. We were there buying a present for a first birthday and left with (sadly) only one board game. We wanted to buy more but for once used our feeble self control. We picked Machi Koro since we've been looking for games with a slightly smaller learning curve than most board games.
Machi Koro (IDW Games) does have a fairly simple rulebook but don't let that deceive you. It's a city building card game for 2 to 4 players. Each card you purchase has different qualities that are activated by specific dice rolls. The cards can gain or lose you money depending on their attributes and wether the number is rolled on your turn or not.
This is a great example of an 'easy to learn, hard to master' type game. Mark, the Slytherin, has been enjoying testing out various strategies and keeps either winning or being a very heavy competitor. I, Hufflepuff, pretty much stick to one strategy and keep loosing.
What started out as an impulse buy of a game we kind of shrugged off as easy and quick has actually turned into a great game that we've been playing quite a bit. I definitely recommend it for beginners since the rules are not insanely overwhelming. Even convinced my dad to play! He must be a Hufflepuff too, we both got killed.
Have you played Machi Koro? What were your strategies?
